    Hartzell Family History

David Hartzell was born Sept. 29, 1844 and died Jan. 28, 1937 at the age of 92. He came to Kansas in 1867, residing at Ozawkie and other points before coming to Rossville in 1872. During that year he and M.F. Tatman opened a drug store under the firm name of Hartzell and Tatman. It was the gathering place for a congenial bunch of old cronies of the partners for many years. The building burned about 1920. Mr. Hartzell retired about 1927 and the post office soon occupied the space he vacated. At the present time, 1971, the entire building is occupied by the Masonic Lodge. Mr. Hartzell was known as "Daddy" Hartzell to many during his 55 years service to the public as a druggist in Rossville.

David Hartzell and Matilda Jane Boots were married Feb. 21, 1875. She came to Rossville with her father, Benjamin F. Boots and brother Melvin in Aug. 1872 from Pen Yan, New York after her mother died in 1871. A brother, James Boots, came to Rossville in 1870. Her father's business was building and contracting. Mrs. Hartzell, Tillie, was born Sept. 25, 1851, Sturgis, Michigan, died Feb. 2, 1953, age 101. She was active in the community and church life. She was the Financial Secretary of the Knights and Ladies of Security, later known as the Security Benefit Assoc., for many years. Grandmother Hartzell, as she was known to many, was noted for her wonderful memory.

Mr. and Mrs. Hartzell were the parents of Ernest, LeRoy, Edna (Mrs. Walter Salley), Frank and Melvin.

David Hartzell Last of Early Day Business Men Claimed By Death

David Hartzell, aged 92 years, 4 months, and 1 day, passed away about 1:00 a.m. last Friday morning. Infirmities of old age had been gradually wearing down the rugged strength he had enjoyed throughout his long life. His passing saddened his friends and relatives who had seen him overcome previous periods of physical weakness to be able to up and around. Death came easily and peacefully as going to sleep.

He was affectionately known as "Daddy" Hartzell to countless friends and acquaintances made during his fifty-five years service to the public as druggist in Rossville. He was 28 years old when he and M.F. Tatman opened a drug store here in 1872 under the firm name of Hartzell & Tatman. It was the gathering place for a congenial bunch of old cronies of the partners, for many years, and when it burned down about 17 years ago only those who have lost something near and dear, can realize what the loss of it meant to Mr. Hartzell.

He later opened up again in strange quarters, the room now occupied by the post office and carried on until about 10 years ago when he retired. Since then he occupied himself about the old home but of late years seldom was seen "up town."

Mr. Hartzell was a native of Ohio where he was born Sept. 28, 1844. He first came to Kansas in 1867, residing for a time at Ozawkie and other points, for five years before coming to Rossville. Three years after coming here on February 21, 1875 he was united in marriage to Matilda Boots. They would have passed their 62nd wedding anniversary the 21st of this month.

Of the five children born to this union, all are living, to aid and comfort their mother, who, too is nearing the ninth decade of her life. They are Ernest D., Leroy P. of Rossville; Mrs. Edna Salley, Silver Lake, Frank D. of Chillicothe, Ill., and Melvin B. of Seattle, Wash. There are also 22 grand children and 8 great grandchildren.

Early in life Mr. Hartzell was baptized in the German Reformed Church.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. H.E. Straw.

Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. Estel Bailey, Dr. and Mrs. John Shenk and Phillip Hartzell with Miss Ruth Salley as accompanist. Mr. Phil Hartzell a grandson sang a solo.

As a tribute to the deceased all the pall bearers were grandsons, namely Orville, Ralph, Allyn, Clyde, Phillip and Richard Hartzell.

Interment was in Rossville cemetery. The almost impassable conditions of the roads made it necessary for the procession to go east of town on Perry street, thence across a field to the cemetery.

Card of Thanks - The family of the late David Hartzell wish to sincerely thank all friends for assistance and will hold in grateful memory all those offering sympathy and floral offerings in the time of their bereavement.
