DELIA — Mr. and Mrs. Michael B. Hurla of Delia are observing their 50th wedding anniversary with a Mass of Thanksgiving at the Sacred Heart Church in Delia at 10 a.m. and an open house at their farm home northeast of Delia from 2 to 5 p.m. The couple are parents of nine sons and daughters. There are 60 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Joseph S. Hurla, 72, Topeka, died Tuesday, August 3, 1993, at a Topeka hospital.
Mr. Hurla was a heavy-equipment operator who worked out of Operating Engineers Union Local No. 101. He later worked for the City of Topeka Street Department. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was born March 19, 1921, in Delia, the son of Michael and Elizabeth Salisbury Hurla.
Mr. Hurla was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic church and the Nocturnal Adoration Society, both in Topeka.
He was married to Phyllis Ann Boyer August 6, 1953, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Moline. She died July 20, 1982.
Survivors include two daughters, Ramona Flower and Jolene Weston, both of Topeka; three sons, Patrick Hurla, at home, Alan Hurla, Topeka, and Gregory Hurla, Overbrook; six sisters, Charlotte Bixby, Rossville, Beulah Curran, Big Springs, Monica McCarter, Carbondale, Elizabeth Seematter, Marysville, and Mary Bridges and Regina Riddle, both of Topeka; a brother, Bernard Hurla, Paxico; and nine grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Hurla will lie in state from 2 until 9 p.m. today at the church where rosaries will be recited by the Nocturnal Adoration Society at 6:30 p.m. and the Parish at 8 p.m. today Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 312 Freeman, 66616. Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
