E. C. Kassebaum, 66, president of the Railroad Industrial Finance Company for the last fifteen years, died early Wednesday morning in Stormont Hospital from injuries he received when he was struck by a Kansas Power and Light Company bus at Huntoon and Mulvane Avenues Tuesday night at 7:15 o’clock.
He was born February 24, 1872, in Rossville. Following his schooling in Rossville, he took up the business of farming, which he followed until 1928, when he moved to Topeka. Mr. Kassebaum made an outstanding success as a producer of watermelons on his farm west of Topeka and was known for many years as the Watermelon king of Shawnee County. He has farmed and owned land in Shawnee County for the past forty years.
Mr. Kassebaum was a thirty second degree Mason and a past master of Blue Lodge No. 50. After going to Topeka he transferred his membership to Lodge No. 51. He also was a member of the York Rite bodies and Arab Shrine Temple and the Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Menoken school board for many years until he moved to Topeka.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Chettie Kassebaum; one daughter, Beatrice Kassebaum of the home; three brothers, J. B. Kassebaum, Kansas City, Mo., W. F. Kassebaum, El Monte, Calif., and Gus Kassebaum Rossville; two sisters, Mrs. Katherine Oliver, Santa Barbara, Calif., and Miss Emma Kassebaum, Seattle, Wash.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock, at the Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary with interment in Rossville Cemetery.
