Donald E. Kiehl, 80, of Topeka/Willard, passed away July 1, 2011, at Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center in Topeka after being ill for several years.

He was born Sept. 18, 1930, in Muscotah, the son of Fredrick John and Mildred Anna (Bushey) Kiehl. The youngest of four children, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and Charles. His sister,
Betty Bales of Holton, recently celebrated her 90th birthday. He grew up on the family farm in Muscotah, graduated from Atchison County Community High School in Effingham in 1948, and joined the U.S. Air Force in June 1948.

On Sept. 17,1950, he married his high school sweetheart, Roberta Ann Valentine, in Effingham. She survives and resides at Homestead Assisted Living, Topeka. They have two daughters, Beverly Kiehl and husband John Pendergrass of Joplin, Mo., and Ann Keller and husband Dennis of Rossville; two grandchildren, Jason Keller of Tecumseh and Amy Keller of Chicago; two great-grandsons, Miles and Beckett; two stepgrandsons, Matthew Pendergrass of Pittsburg and Michael Pendergrass of Cabot, Ark.; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Bailey and Isaac of Cabot, Ark.

Don was in product development for General Motors in Kansas City and co-owned McAbee Body Shop for many years before he became co-owner of A-1 Auto Salvage. He retired from Allied Insurance Co. after 15 years as an auto claims adjuster. He worked part time for Topeka Auto Auction and Briggs Automotive.

Tecumseh was home to Don and Roberta for 43 years before moving to the Willard area. During that time he was a member of the Tecumseh United Methodist church, served on the water district board, and was involved in Decker 4-H Club and the Shawnee County 4-H Horse Club.

Don enjoyed animals, competing in sulky pony races, trout fishing, tinkering, and monthly breakfast with his buddies. His neighbors knew him as a good resource for borrowing equipment or helping with a project. He was known for his humor and friendly smile.
