    John Rau “JR” Maike
    John Rau “JR” Maike, 71, of Hessdale, Kansas, died Sunday,
    October 9, 2011, at his home. He was a life-long resident of the community.

    JR was born May 19, 1940, in Hessdale, Kansas, on the same farm as he died, the son of Adolph and Alice Rau Maike. He attended local schools and graduated in 1958 from Alma High School.

    JR was an entrepreneur and involved with many different businesses over the years. For almost thirty years he owned and operated Maike Pheasant Farm and Hunting Club and was a past president of the North American Game Bird Association. He also operated a large purebred dog kennel and was a past president of the Midwest Pet Producers. JR was one of the founders and a Master Instructor for the Kansas Hunter’s Safety Program.

    JR married Sandra Simmons on July 8,1962, in Eskridge, Kansas. She survives at their home.

    He is also survived by his daughters, Erin Bradshaw and her husband, Eric, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Laurie Fank and her husband, Josh, Rossville, Rosann Spain and her husband, Mitchell, Littleton, Colorado; his sons, John R. Maike, Jr. and his wife, Jackie, Paxico, Rick Maike and his wife, Angela, Owensboro, Kentucky; his brothers, James Maike and his wife, Gladys, Grove, Oklahoma, Robert Maike and his wife, Kaye, Conyers, Georgia; nine grandchildren, Justin Spain, Jessa Spain, Johnaka Maike and her fiancee, Zane McCosker, Hunter Maike, Brandon Yocum, Ryan Yocum, Alex Fank, Westin Maike and Charlotte Bradshaw; and one great-grandson, Emmett McCosker. JR was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Jordan Maike.

    Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 14, 2011, at St. John Lutheran Church in Alma, Kansas. Reverend Robert Grimm will be officiating. Burial will follow at St. John Lutheran Cemetery. The family will greet friends on Thursday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Campanella-Gentry Funeral Home.
