| Obituary- McCracken, Mary McCracken
Mrs. Mary McCracken, 90, Valley Falls, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1988, in a Des Moines, Iowa, hospital. She earlier suffered a heart attack at the home of a daughter she was visiting at Indianola, Iowa.
Mrs. McCracken taught piano lessons more than 50 years and had played for many weddings and funerals at Valley Falls. She moved to Valley Falls as a first grade and music teacher.
She was born Aug. 8, 1897, in Jackson County, the daughter of Daniel Boone and Lenore Myers Sumpter. She was graduated from Mayetta Grade and High Schools. She later was graduated from Campbell Conservatory of Music at Holton where she studied piano, organ and voice. She later was graduated from Pittsburg State Teachers College at Pittsburg.
Mrs. McCracken was a member of the United Methodist Church in Valley Falls, where she was a church organist many years. She was a 50-year member of the Young Women’s Christian Association at Valley Falls and a member of the Kansas Letter Carriers auxiliary and Topeka Music Teachers Association.
She was married to George Marshall McCracken April 26, 1922, at Holton. He died Dec. 14, 1968.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Lenore Weatherby, Indianola, Iowa; two granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the United Methodist Church at Valley Falls. Burial will be in Valley Falls Cemetery. Relatives and friends will meet from 7 until 8 p.m. Friday at Nellis-Hagge Funeral Home in Valley Falls. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church Music Department at Valley Falls or to the Easter Seal Foundation.
