    Mr. and Mrs. McElvain were taken by surprise last Friday evening Mar. 19, when a number of their friends and relatives gathered at their home to celebrate their forty first wedding anniversary. The crowd entered carrying a beautiful rocking chair which they presented to the sur¬prised couple. The evening was pleasantly spent in playing games and music was furnished by Irene Howard and Gladys Eversole. At a late hour light refreshments were served consisting of cake and fruit salad. Mr. McElvain then treated the gentlemen to cigars and the ladies to candy. The invited guests were: Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Howard. Mr. and Mrs. Eversole, Mr. and Mrs. Z. Iteser, Mr. and Mrs. J. K.     Mrs. Josephine McElvain
    Mrs. Josephine McElvain passed away April 3, in Denver, Colo. after a long illness. She was one of the fine long-time residents of Rossville.

    She was born December 22, 1859, at Zionville, Indiana, and came to Rossville in a covered wagon with her parents, at the age of nine, and live in the vicinity of Rossville all her life.

    She was the last survivor of a family of sixteen children.

    She was married to Melvin [sic Melville] McElvain in Rossville who preceded her in death Dec. 30, 1940. They reared their four children here.

    She is survived by one son A.E. McElvain of Wamego, and two daughters, Mrs. Pearl Cless and Mrs. Ethel Kuelper of Denver, Colo., and another daughter, Mary, preceded her in death. A number of grand and great grandchildren mourn her passing.

    Funeral services were held today in the Rossville Christian church in charge of the pastor, Maurice Graham.

    Music was furnished by Mrs. Lorene Harth and Mrs. Maxine Trimble. Miss Shirley Mesmer accompanied at the piano.

    Interment was in Rossville cemetery.

    In a letter from Mrs. Pearl Cless, of Denver, this week, she says her mother, Mrs. M.S. McElvain, long-time resident of this community, celebrated her 90th birthday anniversary December 22nd. Her son Alfred McElvain of Wamego, and her two daughters, Mrs. Cless and Mrs. Ethel Kuelper and a number of callers were present. Mrs. McElvain received sixty cards and fifteen pretty handkerchiefs from friends and relatives. Around a dozen cards came from Rossville. Her only brother, James H. Heslet, now at Silver Springs, Maryland, wrote his sister of living her over four score or sunset years - being God's gift for her to live on and on. Mrs. McElvain isn't too well, and is under the doctor's care.

    Mrs. McElvain makes her home with her two daughters. Mrs. Cless's daughter Alma and her husband, live in Denver and are employed; he works in the post office. Mrs. Kuelper's oldest son is a city detective, and the youngest boy, Don, is an accountant with a business firm in Charles City, Iowa.
