    Obituary- Lewis, William
Our only colored citizen passed away

Mr. William Lewis, an old and respected colored citizen of Rossville, aged 78 years, passed away between 12 and 1 o’clock Monday morning, at his home on Spruce street, following an illness of about two months duration, that started with an attack of pneumonia. He has been under the care of George Brewer, during his illness.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon, March 25, conducted by the Rev. G. C. Albin and the body interred in Rossville cemetery.

Mr. Lewis had been a resident of Rossville since 1883, coming here with his wife from Montgomery county, Tennessee.

He was a native of Virginia where he was born in the year of 1847. His boyhood days were spent in Kentucky. Later moving to Tennessee where he was married to his first wife, who was Miss Jackie Brown. Mrs. Lewis died in 1909.
A few years later he was married to Mrs. Amanda Webster. She passed away two years after their marriage.

Mr. Lewis had lived continuously in Rossville since his arrival here in 1883 and he was respected by everyone as a good man and a good citizen.

Until the removal of all its members, he was an active member of the colored Baptist church here. Realizing his end was near he informed his nurse Mr. Brewer to discontinue giving medicine as he was ready to meet his God.

Mr. Lewis leaves his mother, said to be 102 years old, to mourn his departure, and a sister, both residing at Woodlawn, Tenn. It was one of the happiest moments of the aged colored man’s life when he visited his mother four years ago. His immediate relatives in this state include only a nephew in Topeka.
