    Mr. and Mrs. Edward Rafferty, St. Marys, will observe their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 28, in the Centennial Building, St. Marys. Hosts will be their children and families: Robert and Agnes Rafferty; Keith and Dorothy Rafferty; Richard and Barbara Rafferty; Raymond and Cheryl Rafferty; and Robert and Carol Flerlage. Friends and relatives are invited to attend. The couple requests that no gifts be presented.

    Mr. and Mrs. Rafferty were married March 30, 1932, in Westmoreland. They have 18 grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

    Miss Agnes Kovar, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Kovar of Rossville, was united in marriage to Mr. Robert E. Rafferty, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Rafferty also of Rossville, Saturday, April 16, in St. Stanislaus Catholic church at Rossville.

    The double-ring ceremony was read at a nuptial mass solemnized by the Rev. A. J. Berens. Douglas and Vincent Martinek, cousins of the bride, were acolytes.

    Miss Mary Tholl, organist, played traditional nuptial music and accompanied Mrs. Joyce Brennan who sang, “Ave Marie”, “Lord I Am Not Worthy”, and “O, Mother Dear Pray For Me.”

    The altar was decorated with bouquets of white and lavendar gladioli.

    Mr. Kovar gave his daughter in marriage. Her street-length dress was of white embroidered polished cotton and her shoulder-length veil of nylon fell from an embroidered capulet. She carried a colonial bouquet of red roses.

    Miss Betty Kovar of Kansas City, Mo., sister of the bride was maid of honor. Miss Eileen Zima of Emmett was the bridesmaid. They wore matching dresses of lavendar polished cotton. Each wore an open capulette with small white roses and a misty tie back veil. They carried colonial bouquets of white roses.

    Mr. Ernest Rezac served as best man and Mr. Keith Rafferty, brother of the groom, was groomsman.

    Ushering were Mr. Ben Macha of Council Grove, cousin of the bride, and Mr. Richard Rafferty, brother of the groom.

    Mrs. Kovar chose a light blue rayon shantung dress with white and navy accessories. Mrs. Rafferty wore a navy blue faille with pink and blue accessories. Both wore corsages of white carnations.

    Miss Evelyn Kovar, sister of the bride, presided at the guest book.

    Following the ceremony the reception was held at the home of the bride’s parents. Mrs. Martha Rezac. Mrs. Mary Hudson and Mrs. Phyllis Denham assisted.

    The brides table, laid with lace cloth, was centered with three tiered wedding cake decorated in green and white and topped with miniature wedding bells, encircled with greenery and red roses. Candelabra completed the decorations.

    As the couple left on a short honeymoon trip, the bride wore a navy blue suit with white accessories.

    Both Mr. and Mrs. Rafferty are graduates of Rossville High School. Mrs. Rafferty also is a graduate Research Hospital School of Nursing. Mr. Rafferty is at present employed at Goodyear Plant, Topeka.

    The couple is at home at 111 Taylor, Topeka, Kansas.

    Robert E. Rafferty
    Robert Eugene Rafferty, 68, Rossville, died Friday, March 9, 2001, at the St. Marys Manor.

    He was born November 6, 1932, in Willard, the son of Edward Paul and Nona Smith Rafferty.

    Mr. Rafferty was a life long resident of the Dover-Willard-Rossville area. He graduated from Rossville High School and served in the United States Army, First Infantry, from 1953 to 1955, and was stationed in Germany. He was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. for 33 years before retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Jimmie Lillard Post #31 of the American Legion in Rossville, and the Rubber Workers Union Local #307. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association and the Capital City Gun Club.

    On April 16, 1955, he married Agnes Anna Kovar in Rossville. She died January 7, 2000.

    Surviving him are one son, Michael Rafferty, Rossville; three grandsons, Shawn Rafferty, Spring- dale, AR, Peter Rafferty, Dover; and Adam Rafferty, Garden City; two brothers, Keith Rafferty, Emmett, and Raymond Rafferty, Gladstone, MO; and one sister, Carol Heim, Topeka.

    The family received friends at Parker-Price Mortuary in Topeka Sunday evening. His service was at 10 a.m. Monday at the mortuary. Burial was in Rossville Cemetery.

    ROSSVILLE — Robert Eugene Rafferty, 68, Rossville, died Friday, March 9,2001, at a St. Marys nursing home.

    Mr. Rafferty worked for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. for 33 years. He retired in 1988. He served in the First Infantry in the Army in Germany from 1953 to 1955.

    He was born Nov. 6,1932, in Willard, the son of Edward Paul and Nona Smith Rafferty. He was a lifelong resident of the Dover-Willard-Rossville area.

    Mr. Rafferty was a member of Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion, Rubber Workers Union Local No. 307, the National Rifle Association and the Capital City Gun Club.
    He married Agnes Anna Kovar on April 16 1955, in Rossville. She died Jan. 7,2000.

    Survivors include a son, Michael Rafferty Rossville; two brothers, Keith Rafferty, Emmett and Raymond Rafferty, Gladstone, Mo.; a sister Carol Heim, Topeka; and three grandsons.

    Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Parker-Price Mortuary in Topeka. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery. Mr. Rafferty will lie in state after 1 p.m. today at the mortuary where visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m.
