MAPLE HILL – Walter L. Rice Jr., 68, died Tuesday, Aug 9. 1994, at a Topeka hospital.
He was born Nov. 3, 1925 at Emporia, the son of Walter L. Rice Sr. and Lula Zoah Martin Rice.
Mr. Rice was an accountant and had worked for several Topeka firms before starting his own company in Maple Hill in 1971. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He married Vivian Randall on June 15, 1947. They were divorced in 1969. He married Opal Conner on Aug 2, 1969, in Waco, Texas.
Survivors include his widow, Opal Rice, of the home; four daughters, Susan Snodgrass, Trudy Filkins, Patricia Simpson and Cindy Reilly, all of Topeka; three step-daughters, Judy O’Neill, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Martha Cook, Klamath Falls, Ore., and Nancy Pelfrey, Rossville; two step-sons, Jerry Conner and Terry Conner, both of Topeka; two brothers, Donald Rice, Boulder, Colo., and Warren Rice, Topeka; two sisters, Elizabeth Specht, Topeka, and Barbara Miller, Idaho Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren, 11 step-grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She [sic he] was preceded in death by one step-son, Stephen Conner, in 1989.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Maple Hill Community Congregational Church, Maple Hill, with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery. Mr. Rice will lie in state after 10 a.m. Thursday at Verschelden Chapel, Maple Hill. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
