    William Shafer
    ROSSVILLE — William A. "Bill” Shafer, 58, Rossville, died Thursday, May 10,2001, at his home. He had cancer.

    Mr. Shafer was a truck driver and had worked for several different companies, and he drove as an owner and operator.

    He was born June 6,1942, in McFall, Mo., the son of Robert Russell and Velina Elizabeth Combs Shafer. He was raised in the Holton and Valley Falls communities.

    Mr. Shafer participated in several bowling leagues in Topeka. He also was an avid fisherman and a cook.

    He married Theresa A. Powell on Dec. 30,
    1975, in Topeka. She survives.

    Other survivors include four sons, Russell R. Shafer, Chicago, and Frank L. Schneider, Anthony W. Schneider and Steven B. Schneider, all of Topeka; a brother, Buddy Shafer, Topeka; two sisters, Ana Mae Lake, Blue Rapids, and Betty Lou Eteeyan, Topeka; and four grandchildren.

    Mr. Shafer was cremated. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home in St. Marys. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

    Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart of America Hospice and sent in care of the funeral home.
