• Documents		Obituary- Shannon, Aaron 1 A.C. SHANNON ENDS LIFE BY DRINKING ACID Aaron C. Shannon, aged 56, committed suicide Sunday forenoon by swallowing two ounces of carbolic acid, at the north gate of the A. A. Bixby home on the corner of Pine and Adrian streets. He walked a short distance toward the alley back of the Bixby property and sank to the ground with his back to a tree. Death came to him at 10 o’clock, about an hour after taking the acid. Mr. Shannon had just made an unsuccessful attempt at reconciliation with his wife, Mrs. Emma Shennon [sic], from whom he had been separated about two months. Shannon took the acid in the presence of his wife, and Mrs. A. A. Bixby, his mother-in-law. Mrs. William Marney, a neighbor and Mr. Joe Cottle, of Wamego, who had just arrived on the morning train from the west, saw Shannon drink from the bottle. The tragedy ended a romance which began when Mr. Shannon and Emma Bixby were young. Because of parental objections they did not marry. Mr. Shannon left Rossville in 1895 and went to Lincoln, Neb. A year later he was married to Miss Ida Lamar. Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Shannon, two of them dying in infancy, Miss Bixby never married. In May, 1920 Shannon was divorced from his first wife. A couple of years later she married and with her children is living at Salina. On April 14, 1923, Shannon and Miss Bixby were married. After a year of married life they separated about two months ago. Mrs. Shannon returned to the home of her parents. He left Rossville for a short time but returned here since which time he has been rooming at the O. H. Young home. Dr. H. L. Clark, county coroner, was called to view the body. As it was an obvious case of suicide no inquest was held. The body was taken in charge by the Conwell undertaking firm and taken to Topeka Sunday afternoon where it was kept until funeral arrangements were completed. Two of Mr. Shannon’s children arrived Monday afternoon from Salina and cooperated with Mrs. Shannon in making arrangements. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 in the Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. G. C. Albin. Music was furnished by Miss Mary Van Vleck, Mrs. C. E. Greser and Miss Nora Stamp. The songs selected were “Jesus Lover of my Soul” and “I Need Thee Every Hour”. The pall bearers were Messrs. H. E. Ishmael, Elmer Witter, Roy Hawks, Harry Jamieson, R. A. Shipley and C. E. Cless. The body was interred in Rossville cemetery. Mr. Shannon was a native of Indiana where he was born in Mont Pellier, February 10, 1868. He came to Kansas at the age of nineteen. He lived in and around Rossville for a number of years in the early nineties. Beside his widow he is survived by eight children Jay, Emery, Esther, Elsie, Kennett, Marion, Lulu and Virgie Shannon, all of Salina, Kansas. One brother, Mr. Louis Shannon of Bryant, Indiana also survives.
