    Alice Hillix and Henry Smatla were married October 19, 1949, in Topeka. He is a retired farmer and the couple has resided in the Meriden community since 1954.

    Alice Laura Smatla
    MERIDEN — Alice Laura Smatla, 75, Meriden, died Wednesday, April 12, 1995, at a Winchester nursing home.

    Mrs. Smatla had been a bookkeeper for Central National Bank in Topeka and later worked at the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Office in Topeka until she retired.

    She was born Sept. 29, 1919, a McLouth, the daughter of Perle and Gertrude Stone Hillix. She attended Eureka Grade School and was graduated from McLouth High School. She moved to Meriden from Silver Lake in
    1954.

    Mrs. Smatla was a member of Meri-den United Methodist Church and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Meriden.

    She was married to Henry John Smatla on Oct. 19, 1949, in Topeka. He survives.

    Other survivors include a son, Larry L. Smatla, Oskaloosa; a daughter, Marcia L. Reiter, Topeka; a sister, Pearl H. Thomas, Lawrence; and three grandchildren.

    Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Meriden United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Czech-Moravian Cemetery, Delia. Mrs. Smatla will lie in state from noon Friday to 11 a.m. Saturday at Barker-Price Mortuary in Topeka where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday.     Alice L. Smatla
    Mrs. Alice Laura Smatla, 75, Meriden, died Wednesday morning, April 12, 1995, at Jefferson County Geriatric Center, Winchester. She was born September 29, 1919, at McLouth, the daughter of Perle and Gertrude Stone Hillix. She attended Eureka Grade School and graduated from McLouth High School. She had lived in Silver Lake before moving to Meriden in 1954.

    She had been a bookkeeper for Central National Bank in Topeka and later worked at the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service-Office in Topeka until her retirement.

    Mrs. Smatla was a member of the Meriden United Methodist Church and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star at Meriden.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, William Hillix; three sisters. Opal Bucheim, Marguerite Burton, and Garnett Knapp.

    She was married to Henry John Smatla October 19, 1949, at Topeka. He survives.

    Other survivors include a son, Larry Lee Smatla, Oskaloosa; a daughter, Marcia Lynn Reiter, Topeka; a sister, Pearl Hillix Thomas, Lawrence; and three grandchildren.

    The family received friends from 7:00 to 8:00 Friday evening. Her service was at 11:00 Friday at Parker-Price Mortuary, Topeka.
