60th Anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Smatla celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary May 5th. They are the oldest surviving couple of the original Czechoslovakian community which settled northwest of Silver Lake many years ago. Their entire family were home for the happy event.
Reverend Tom Smatla and his wife flew from Butte, Mont., and Ben Smatla flew from Jacksonville, Fla. Other children present were Henry Smatla, Meriden, and Edward and William Smatla, Silver Lake. Daughters were Lydia Dailey, Overland Park; Marie DeVeney, Raytown, Mo.; and Alice Kingman, Independence, Mo.
A basket dinner was enjoyed by the entire Smatla family. Later in the day their children hosted an open house which was enjoyed by many friends of long standing.

Henry and Alice Smatla will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary Sunday, October 15, with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Meriden United Methodist Church. Friends and relatives are invited to attend the reception which will be hosted by their children and their families: Larry, Linda, Laura and Luke Smatla, Oskaloosa, and Marcia, Ron and Travis Reiter, Topeka.
Alice Hillix and Henry Smatla were married October 19, 1949, in Topeka. He is a retired farmer and the couple has resided in the Meriden community since 1954.

| Obituary- Smatla, Henry 1 Henry John Smatla
Henry John Smatla, 93, Meriden, died Dec. 12 201.3, at Linnwood Park of Meriden in Meriden, KS. He was born June 6, 1920, at Maple Hill, the son of Thomas and Marie Smatla. Mr. Smatla was a member of Community Church, located north of Rossville, The Rossville Presbyterian Church and the ZCBJ Lodge.
Mr. Smatla served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938 and enlisted and served in the Navy from 1941 to 1945. He served sea duty for 18 months in the European Theater, for which he received two battle stars and served 26 months in the Asiatic- Pacific Campaign, Fleet Air Wing 17, for which he received three battle stars. During that time, he traveled 10 oceans and seas.
Mr. Smatla was an AVA machinist. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1945. Mr. Smatla married Alice Laura Hilllx, October 19,1949, in Topeka. She preceded him in death on April 12,1995. Surviving are a son, Larry Lee Smatla and wife Linda of Oskaloosa; a daughter, Marcia Lynn Reiter and husband Ron of Topeka; three grandchildren, Laura Marie Smatla Turner and husband Jim, Travis Lee Reiter and wife Cait and Luke Edward Smatla and wife Heather; great-grandchildren, Garrett and Lydia Turner; and sisters, Lydia Carl and Marie DeVeney. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Thomas, Ben, Edward, and William, and a sister, Alice Kingman.
Mr. Smatla first farmed north of Silver Lake and north of Rossville. He moved to a farm north of Meriden in 1954, where grain and cattle were his pride. He was a member of Meriden United Methodist Church, Topeka North Post 400 of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and Moose Lodge 555. He served as a board member of the Meriden Co-Op; the Meriden United Methodist Church; and served on the FHA Board for 12 years. He was a former member of Meriden Lodge 236, AF & AM.
Funeral services were Dec. 16 at Meriden United Methodist Church. Military honors were conducted at Czech-Moravian Cemetery, Delia.

| Birthday- Smatla, Henry Henry "HanK” Smatla, Meriden, will celebrate his 83rd birthday as guest oi honor at a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. June 1 at the United Methodist Church in Meriden.
Hosts will be his children and spouses, Larry and Linda Smatla, Oskaloosa; Marcia and Ron Reiter, Topeka; grandchildren Laura and Jim Turner, Luke Smatla and Travis Reiter; and greatgrandchild Garrett Turner.
Mr. Smatla was born June 6, 1920, in Maple Hill. He is a retired farmer.
He married Alice Hillix on Oct. 19, 1949. Mrs. Smatla died April 12, 1995.
