    Thomas Smatla and Miss Mary [sic] Juran, two popular young people of the Bohemian neighborhood were granted a license to wed last Thursday by the probate judge at Topeka.

    Miss Marie Juran and Tom Smatla were married last Tuesday and a large crowd of relatives and friends were present. They will make their home in this community.

    60th Anniversary
    Mr. and Mrs. Tom Smatla celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary May 5th. They are the oldest surviving couple of the original Czechoslovakian community which settled northwest of Silver Lake many years ago. Their entire family were home for the happy event.

    Reverend Tom Smatla and his wife flew from Butte, Mont., and Ben Smatla flew from Jacksonville, Fla. Other children present were Henry Smatla, Meriden, and Edward and William Smatla, Silver Lake. Daughters were Lydia Dailey, Overland Park; Marie DeVeney, Raytown, Mo.; and Alice Kingman, Independence, Mo.

    A basket dinner was enjoyed by the entire Smatla family. Later in the day their children hosted an open house which was enjoyed by many friends of long standing.

    Mr. and Mrs. Tom Smatla of Willard, announce the marriage of their son, Rev. Thomas F. Smatla, to Miss Mary Jean Olsen, on Sunday afternoon, August 4, at the First Presbyterian church at Peoria, Ill.

    The Reverend Smatla was graduated from schools in ’his native town and is an alumnus of the University of Dubuque, in Iowa. He completed his training in theology at McCormick Seminary in Chicago and the Presbyterian church in Farmington was his first pastorate. Since last October he has been assistant to the Rev. William Atkinson, Young of the First Presbyterian church, Peoria, Ill.

    He and his bride will return from a northern wedding trip in about two weeks and will make their home at Peoria, Ill.

    Rev. Thomas Smatla
    A memorial service was held April 22, at the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Junction, CO. Mr. Smatla died Thursday, April 18, 2002. at his home. He had cancer.

    He was born May 18, 1915; near Delia, the son of Thomas G. and Marie Smatla.

    He graduated from high school in Rossville and later graduated from the University of Dubuque in Iowa and McCormick Seminary in Chicago. IL. The Rev. Smatla served Presbyterian Churches in Farmington and Peoria, IL, Marshall, MO, Bemidji. MN, and Butte. MT, before he joined the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Junction. He retired in 1980. Rev. Smatla had been moderator of Synod in Minnesota and president of the Izaak Walton League of Minnesota. He was a member of the Thunder Mountain Camera Club and the Masonic- Lodge in Butte, MT.

    Survivors include his wife of 57 years. Mary Jean Smatla; two sons, Thomas W. Smatla, Brighton. CO, and Paul H. Smatla. Grand Junction, CO; two sisters. Lydia Carl. Prairie Village, and Marie DeVeney, Raytown. MO; four brothers, Ben Smatla. Jacksonville. FL, Henry Smatla, Meriden, Edward Smatla and Bill Smatla. both of Silver Lake; nine grandchildren; and four great-grand-children.

    Rev. Smatla was preceded in death by a son, John Smatla.

    GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Memorial services were April 22 at the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Junction for the Rev. Thomas S. Smatla, 86, Grand Junction. He died April 18, 2002, at his home. He had cancer.

    Rev. Smatla served Presbyterian Churches in Farmington, III., Peoria, III., Marshall, Mo., Bemidji, Minn., and Butte, Mont., before he joined the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Junction. He retired in 1980.
