    Melvin C. Steele Sr.
    MAPLE HILL - Melvin C. Steele Sr., 85, formerly of Maple Hill, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, at a Norwalk, Calif., nursing home.

    Mr. Steele was an auto worker for General Motors in California.

    He was born March 30, 1913, at Rossville, the son of Lloyd B. and Nettie Lemon Steele. He was graduated from Maple Hill High School, and he had lived in Topeka until the late 1930s.

    He was married to Pauline Plumley in Topeka. They were divorced.

    Survivors include three sons, Melvin C.A. Steele Jr. and Ronald F. Steele, both in California, and Robert W. Steele, Cerritos, Calif.; a daughter, Beverly J. Gagney, in California; four brothers, Merle Steele, Norman Steele and Carl Steele, all of Topeka, and Lloyd "Dale" Steele, Denver City, Colo.; four sisters, Wanda Godlove, Ethel Klass and Edna Snook, all of Topeka, and Ruby Blossom, Warner Robbins, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

    Mr. Steele was preceded in death by a son, Donald Steele.

    Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Maple Hill Cemetery at Maple Hill. Mr. Steele will lie in state after noon Sunday at Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka where relatives and friends will meet from 3 to 4 p.m.

    Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice and sent in care of the funeral home.
