A large crowd also gathered at the Verschelden farm in Sandy Hook to charivari Alphonce (better known as "Babe") and his bride, the former Anna Aubert.
  		Anniversary- Verschelden, A.T. and Ann Golden Anniversary for the A.T. Verscheldens A.T. “Babe” and Ann Verschelden, St. Marys, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday, October 4, at 9:15 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church, St. Marys. A reception in the Centennial Building will be from two to four o’clock. Relatives and friends are in¬vited. Hosting the occasion will be their children: Theresa Schleif, Topeka; Alice Zeller, Mayetta; Joan Falley, Zeandale; Regina Verschelden, Ft. Collins, Colo.; John Verschelden, Lebanon, Mo.; Rita Etzel, LaMesa, Calif.; Ann Fouts, Ottawa; Anita Culbertson, Wamego; Frank Verschelden, Topeka; Margaret Cunningham, Norfolk, Va.; Kenny Verschelden, Rossville; and Joe Verschelden, with the U.S. Navy in San Diego, Calif. A daughter, Mary Jo Lacock, died earlier this year. The Verscheldens have 35 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Alphonse T. Verschelden and Anna M. Aubert were married October 5, 1937, in the Immaculate Conception Church, St. Marys. They have spent all of their lives in the St. Marys community. Sandy Hook has been their home all their married years, where they now live as semi-retired farmers. The couple requests that no gifts be presented.

• Documents		Obituary- Verschelden, Alphonse 1 Alphonse T. Verschelden Alphonse T. "Babe” Verschelden, 89, St. Marys, died late Wednesday, December 25,1991, at his home. Mr. Verschelden was a farmer and truck gardener and supplied watermelons to area businesses. He was born July 22, 1902, south of St. Marys, the son of Alphonse L. and Anna Meyer Verschelden, and spent his life m the St. Marys community. He attended Strickler's Business College in Topeka. Mr. Verschelden was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council No. 657, both in St. Marys, and Thomas A. McNeive General Assembly of Fourth Degree of Knights of Columbus. He was married to Anna Aubert October 5, 1937, in St. Marys. She survives. A daughter, Mary Jo Lacock, died in April 1987, and a grandson, Andy Zeller, died October 19,1988. Other survivors include eight daughters, Theresa Schleif and Margaret Cunningham, both of Topeka, Alice Zeller, Mayetta, Joan Worrel, Zeandale, Regina Verschelden, Manhattan, Rita Etzel, La Mesa, Calif., Ann Fouts, Ottawa, and Anita Culbertson, Wamego; four sons, John Verschelden, Lebanon, Mo., Frank Verschelden, Topeka, Kenny Verschelden, Rossville, and Joe Verschelden, at home; 36 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery. A rosary was recited Friday at Verschelden Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys.
  		Obituary- Verschelden, Alphonse 2 In Memoriam My dad, “Babe” Verschelden, died on Christmas Day 1991, one year ago. He was my “Gardening Partner” among other things. In honor of his memory, I share this poem with the “Star” readers who also knew him. To My Father at St. Francis I see half the side-porch is still missing where the whirlwind ripped it away and gray ghosts of floodwaters mar the whitewashed wainscotting along the kitchen wall. Last night I slept in your bed. The mattress, obviously contoured to fit your curves Swayed aimlessly on iron springs Like a ship in the midst of vast seas. The north wind rattling at the front door shook me awake. Within the hand-chisled stones I feel your presence in this old house merged with your father and your father's father. At midnight the rooster crowed— I went to check for possum, skunk, or snake Sleet bit my flesh: I drew my wrap 'round tighter. On the rafters perched the Leghorn cock midst the flock. Nothing apparently amiss. Sunrise was hardly here an hour when the calves began to bawl Bossy, the cow with the long horns, wanted milking Three sleek cats mingled prudently near the mangel From under the hayloft steps, hound dog emerged, yawned wide, and I saw the wolf-black mouth. Now I sit at your desk near the fire using your pen and paper The scent of warm milk hovers above my hands Musty hay dust coats my windblown hair.
