    J. Vorhies Passes Away
    J. Vorhies passed away Saturday afternoon shortly after 2:00 after an illness of many weeks. Mr. Vorhies although well up in the eighties had a wonderful constitution and several times during his illness when it was thought he would only live a few hours, he would rally and once more renew his fight for life. Mr. Vorhies death was caused by catarrh of the liver.

    Mr. Vorhies had been a resident of Rossville about 14 years and before coming here had resided on a farm near Shannon City, Iowa. During his residence here he had won the respect and esteem of all the citizens of Rossville.

    The funeral was held Sunday at the Methodist church and one of the greatest gatherings in years attended the ceremonies. Mr. Vorhies was a member of Hesperian lodge, A.F. & A.M. under whose auspices the burial rites were conducted. Interment was made in the Rossville cemetery.

    Mr. Vorhies leaves a family of five children, Chas. of Los Angeles, Elton, of Scranton, Kan., Frank of Shannon City, Iowa, Mrs. Yocum of this city and Mrs. Nelson, of Oakland, all of whom were here for the funeral.

    Obituary
    At two o'clock Saturday afternoon, April 11, 1914, at his home in Rossville, Kansas, Josiah Vorhies passed from the cares and pains of this life to the happiness of the world beyond. He had reached his eighty third year. He had lived in Rossville 14 years and had won the love and respect of all who know him. He was born October 17, 1831 at Mt. Ephraim, Ohio.

    In 1852 when a young man of 20 years Mr. Vorhies made a trip to California when the gold fever was the highest. The nearest railroad was at Cumberland, Maryland. He went by stage to that place and from there to New York City, where he took a sailing vessel to the Chagres river. It took him 14 days to get that far on his journey. He crossed the Isthmus of Panama and took another sailing vessel to Sacramento, Calif. Something went wrong with the ship and he was 120 days getting to Sacramento. He and the rest of the crew came near dying from hunger and thirst before they reached their destination. He was in California two years. This trip was one of success, sickness and hardships. At the end of two years he returned to his home in Ohio over the same route but made better time.

    In 1856 he got the western fever again but this M.E. church and was conductime he landed in Ringgold county, Iowa. He took a homestead and became quite a prosperous farmer. In 1858 he was married to Miss Paulina Quinn. He and his wife were members of the Methodist church all their married life. There was born to them five sons and three daughters, all of them are living except a son that died at the age of seven. His wife passed away seven years ago. Mr. Vorhies leaves to mourn his loss seven children, fifteen grand children, five great grandchildren and four sisters.

    The funeral was held at the Rossville M.E. church and was conducted by Rev. A.S. Embree of Topeka. Mr. Vorhies was a member of Hesperian Lodge, A.F. & A.M. The members of the lodge took charge of the services at the cemetery which were beautiful and impressive
