| Obituary- Wilt, Daniel Daniel Wilt, Pioneer Citizen, Passes Away
Mr. Daniel Wilt, aged 89 years, 6 months and 4 days, for forty-eight years a resident of Rossville, died early Monday morning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F.N. Binns, with whom he had made his home the past few years. His death was due to the infirmities of old age.
Mr. Wilt had grown more enfeebled the past few months. Up to a year ago he had remained remarkably active for his advanced age.
The deceased gentleman was a native of Pennsylvania. He was born in York county, near Harrisburg, October 10, 1834, and lived there until the age of fourteen and then moved to Perry county and learned the plasterer's trade. He worked at his trade there until his removal to Kansas in the fall of 1876.
In the spring of 1865 he enlisted in Company F, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry and saw service at Petersburg, Ft. Steadman and in the pursuit of Lee until the latter's capture. He was mustered out in May 1865.
Mr. Wilt was married in 1860 at Blaine, Perry county, to Melinda J. Kern, a native of that county. To this union nine children were born. Four of these with Mrs. Wilt had preceeded him to the great beyond, preceded him to the great beyond, the latter about six years ago.
After his arrival in Rossville in 1876, Mr. Wilt farmed just west of Rossville on what is known as the Devinney place west of Cross creek for about four years and then purchased 190 acres north of Rossville which included the present F.R. Dannefer farm and the tract owned by A.B. Jamieson. All the original improvements on the Dannefer farm were placed there by Mr. Wilt.
After growing too old to look after his farm Mr. and Mrs. Wilt built a residence in Rossville and moved to town.
Mr. Wilt was a member of the Presbyterian church and a devout Christian. He had a wide circle of friends in the community and his decease will be mourned by them as well as his children to whom he was always a kind and loving father.
The funeral service was held at the F.N. Binns home Tuesday, April 15, at 3 o'clock conducted by the Rev. Mr. Nelson, of Topeka. Music was rendered by Miss Edith Higginbotham and Dr. N.S. Clothier with Mrs. Major at the piano. The pall bearers were three sons-in-law and three grandsons. Interment was in the family lot in Rossville cemetery.
The surviving members of the family include two sons, Mr. J.R. Wilt, of Topeka; Mr. I.B. Wilt, of Rossville; three daughters, Mrs. Mary Binns, Mrs. Salome Jamieson and Mrs. Fannie Reser, all of Rossville.
With the passing of Mr. Wilt only two Civil war veterans remain as residents of Rossville township.
