Accident Near Rossville Claims Life of Robert Wilt

Tuesday evening, December 2, 1975, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Department received a call at 6:17 p.m. to answer an injury accident approximately one mile north of Rossville on the Rossville-Delia Road.
When Sheriff’s office personnel arrived on the scene, the driver of the truck, Robert Wilt of Rossville, was lying on the side of the road. According to the officer who questioned him, Wilt said he had swerved to avoid hitting a tractor which was being driven down the road without lights.
The truck, a 1,500 gallon bulk tank
delivery unit for Mobil Oil Company, went in the ditch. The tank was half full of fuel. Fire departments from Soldier Township and Topeka Township responded to the accident call. The foam truck from Soldier Township sprayed the area with foam to avoid the possibility of a gasoline fire erupting from the tank.
Wilt, 31, was taken by ambulance to Stormont-Vail Hospital where he was.
admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and placed on the critical list. He died about noon on Wednesday, December 3. Immediate survivors are his wife, Delores, and a daughter, Tracy; his father, Mr. Roy Wilt, Rossville; his mother, Mrs. Helen Kampschroeder, Lawrence; a sister, Lynda Wood, Nashville, Tenn. A complete obituary will appear in Tuesday’s paper.

The tractor left the scene of the accident. According to the Sheriff’s office, a suspect was in custody but his name was not being released at press time.
