| Anniversary- Wehner, Clarence and Rita 3 Neither rain, nor mud, nor gloom of night…
On Dec. 31,1941, at 9 p.m. Clarence Wehner and Rita Bindel met at a dance hall south of Kiro, called Riverside. I, Clarence, courted her until the spring of 1944. We were to get married at a country church south of Sabetha. It was called Fidelity Catholic Church.
We were supposed to tie the knot on April 12. On April 11,1944, it rained all day. The wedding party was supposed to have rehearsal at 7 p.m. April 11. We got stuck in the middle of the road in the mud. Finally we walked to the church by 9 p.m. and had rehearsal for the four of us. Then we walked to the bride-to-be home 1 1/2 miles south of the church, and got there by midnight.
The next morning the ground was frozen enough and we took a team of horses and wagon and pulled the car until the wheels would turn and it made a good track. Then back to the church by 10 a.m. That was on April 12, 1944.
We came to live on a farm by Delia, then to Rossville. Had three children, 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. That was 56 years ago. and we are still married and love each other.
— CLARENCE and RITA WEHNER, Rossville.
