    Phineas M. Brooks
    Phineas Manning Brooks was born near Cleveland, Ohio, Feb. 16, 1842, died at Rossville, Kans. April 10th, 1918 aged 76 years, 1 month and 26 days. At the age of twenty he enlisted in Co. B. 25th Michigan Inf., at Oakland, Michigan for a term of three years. On January 15, 1864 he was transferred to the Invalided Corps. He was discharged from the army at Springfield, Ill., as corporal July 8th, 1865, from Co. K, 5th Regiment of the Reserve Corps. Mr. Brooks came to Kansas, June 8, 1882, locating at Smith Center [sic], Kansas. In the spring of 1900 he came with his family to Rossville and remained several years moving to various other points, but continued to consider Rossville as home. Mr. Brooks was a member of the Methodist church having joined that denomination 46 years ago, and his funeral was held from the Rossville M.E. church Thursday April 11, conducted by the Rev. J.R. Shaffer. The pall bearers were Mr. W.V. Hook, Mr. John Bond, Mr. Joe Hopkins, Mr. John Reid and Mr. O.H. Young, Mr. M.L. Cless.

    Besides the widow the surviving members of his family are two daughters, Mrs. H.E. James of Rossville, Mrs. Edna Wallace of Salt Lake, Utah; two sons, Newton, of Ringling Okla. and Ernest of Maple Hill, Kansas. One brother Lem Brooks and one sister, Miss Angelina Brooks, reside at Rockford, Mich., and one sister, Mrs. A.E. Newton, at Hoquiam, Washington.
