MAPLE HILL - Opal Stem Rice, 85, passed away Friday, February 17,2012 in Topeka.
She was born February 5, 1927 near Colmesneil, TX, the daughter of Floyd E. and Elizabeth Gibbs Stem. Opal had lived in Texas until moving to the Maple Hill community in 1969. She had lived in Topeka since 2007.
Mrs. Rice was a secretary for the Texas Farm Bureau and had worked at State Office Systems in Topeka. She worked for her husband at Rice Accounting in Maple Hill.
She was married to Elbert B. Conner on June 19,1947. They later divorced. She was married to Walter L. Rice Jr. on August 2, 1969. He preceded her in death on August 9, 1994. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Stephen in 1989 and Terry in 2003.
Surviving are her children, Judy (Stephen) O'Neill, San Bernardino, CA, Jerry (Jaye) Connor, Topeka, Martha (Stephen) Cook, Topeka, Nancy (Randall) Pelfrey, Rossville; a step daughter, Trudy (Gary) Filkins, Topeka; daughters-in-law Margaret Conner and Joyce Conner, both of Maple Hill; three sisters, Vera Watson, Ft. Smith, AR, Lena Hester, Phoenix, AZ, and Linda Sheffield, Silsbee, TX; 11 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, February 21,2012 at the Maple Hill Community Congregational Church, Maple Hill. Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Rice will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:30 P.M. Monday, February 20, 2012 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or Helping Hands Humane Society and sent in care of the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent to www.piperfuneralhome.com.
