  Documents » Slide Show		Anniversary- Strimple, Frank and Clara 1 STRIMPLE GOLDEN WEDDING CELEBRATION The first reunion of the family of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Strimple of this city, was held at the country home of their daughter. Mrs. Jessie Attebury, last Sunday, May 17. The occasion also was in celebration of their golden wedding anniversary. All nine of their children are living and were present. The party numbered forty- six. Children present were Mrs. Minnie Stockton, Eureka; Mrs. Louise Brock, Grandview, Mo.; Mrs. Georgia Wares, Lookout, Okla.; Mrs. Attebury, Clyde Strimple, Mrs. Clara DeGraff and Guy Strimple of Rossville; Mrs. Eva DeGraff and Orville Strimple of Topeka. In addition to the sons-in-law and daughters-in-law, the following grandchildren attended the reunion: Mr. and Mrs. George Brock, Carrolton, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. Everett Brock Kansas City, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. Max Tompkins, Eureka; Irma Stockton, Topeka; Loren Stockton, Eureka; Marie and Marvin Brock, Grandview, Mo.; Esther Mae and Warren Wares, Lookout, Okla.; Viola and Orville Strimple, Rossville; Muriel, Freda, Bernice and Irene DeGraff, Rossville; Leanna and Clyde Strimple, Rossville; Louise, June, Georgellen and La Verne DeGraff, Topeka; Betty Ann and Carolyn Strimple, Topeka. The only grandchild who could not be present was Elmer Brock who is with the U. S. S. Northampton. Mr. and Mrs. Strimple were married at Eureka, May 6, 1886, by Probate Judge Frank Lamb. Mr. Strimple is well-known in Shawnee county educational circles. He has taught school forty years. He is also a painter and decorator, and still works at his trade. The couple have lived in Kansas almost all of their married life. Mr. Strimple came to Kansas in 1870 in a covered wagon. He has lived 36 in Shawnee county and 30 years in Greenwood county.
  		Anniversary- Strimple, Frank and Clara 2 Celebrate 65th Wedding Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Frank Strimple will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary next Sunday, May 6, at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Sara DeGraff in Topeka. The occasion also will witness the marriage of Miss June DeGraff, a granddaughter, at Trinity church. Mr. and Mrs. Strimple were married at Eureka, Kansas, and are the parents of nine children, all of whom are living.
  		Anniversary- Strimple, Frank and Clara 3 Mr. and Mrs. Strimple married seventy years Mr. and Mrs. Frank Strimple will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary Sunday, May 6. This is an event which can only be shared by two such devoted people. Mr. and Mrs. Strimple were married in that year of 1886 in Greenwood county, Kansas. They enjoyed a grade school friendship which grew into a lifetime of steadfast understanding and faithfulness. Mr. Strimple will be 92 in December and Mrs. Strimple will be 89 in June. Paul Strimple brought his family here from Illinois in a covered wagon in 1870. Frank is the only one of the twelve children still living. His father was a local Methodist minister and he remembers stories told to him about his grandfather who fought in the Revolutionary War and spent the winter at Valley Forge. The Strimple family moved on to Greenwood county from Rossville in 1882 and it was there that Frank Strimple met his future wife when they went to grade school together. She was born in Iowa and was "adopted out" at an early age. In 1889 Mr. Strimple moved his family to Colorado but in 1893 they returned to Greenwood county, where he went to farming during that depression year. He said he "sold hogs for $2.65 a hundred, corn for 13c a bushel and bought a wagon for $64.00." Having lived through three depressions, those of 1885, 1893 and the '30's: Mr. Strimple is well qualified to remember the hard times they bring. Although Mr. Strimple did not attend a high school he took several courses at Washburn college and also some correspondence courses which gave him the equivalent of this education. It was eleven years after his schooling before he applied for a teaching certificate. After receiving his certificate he started on his teaching and painting career in 1898. He taught for 50 years, 30 of which were spent in Shawnee county. He was an instructor for five years at 101 school and spent four years at Twin Rose school, country schools near Rossville. The painting work he did, as he says, was a good companion job as he could paint during the summer months when school was not in session, and this helped considerably as far as the family budget was concerned. The Strimples have lived 43 years of their married life in Rossville having lived in their present home since they returned in 1913. They have given much service in the interest of the Methodist church. he is a member of the Silver Lake Odd Fellows lodge and she of the Rebekahs. Mrs. Strimiple has provided a wonderful home for her family and is still keeping it so for her husband. She says that home is the best place to be and Mr. Strimple says of her that no one could have done a better job of raising a family than she has done. Even though Mr. Strimiple lost his right hand in an accident in a sorghum mill 80 years ago, it has not been a handicap for him. The fact that he broke his leg in a fall several years ago has not kept him down and certainly has not been depressing to him. Both Mr. and Mrs. Strimple possess a keen and active mind and enjoy the flowers that bloom each spring in the yard they tended so carefully until the last few years when the heart has been willing but the body has been fighting a little. A celebration is planned in Topeka Sunday for this remarkable couple. Their children are all expected to gather for the occasion except Mrs. Georgia Ware who lives in Oklahoma and will be unable to be here. Other children are Mrs. Minnie Stockton, Mrs. Eva DeGraff and Mr. Orville Strimple, all of Topeka; Mrs. Clara DeGraff of Oregon, Mrs. Jessie Burton of South Dakota, Mr. Clyde Strimple and Mr. Guy Strimple of Rossville. There are 28 grandchildren and 48 great grandchildren. -- Mr. and Mrs. F.E. Strimple Mr. and Mrs. F.E. Strimple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary Sunday, May 6, with a family dinner at the home of their son and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Orville Strimple in Topeka. Mr. Attebury is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Attebury, and has grown to manhood here. Mrs. Attebury is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Strimple and is one of the popular young ladies of the city. Mr. and Mrs. Attebury will occupy a farm two miles south of Rossville owned by the groom. We wish Mr. and Mrs. Attebury much happiness.

Attebury of Rossville became the bride of Mr. Buel Burton of Meckling, South Dakota. The service was held: before the fireplace in the home of the bride’s brother, Mr. Orville Strimple of Topeka, and was performed by the Rev. Don Jones of the Rossville Methodist Church. A lovely arrangement of salmon-colored gladioli decorated the mantel, Mr. and Mrs. Orville Strimple were the bridal attendants. For her wedding, Mrs. Burton chose a softly tailored dress of rust-colored sheer, with white accessories. Her corsage was of talisman roses. Following the service, guests were served from the bridal table which was lighted with candles and covered with a lovely lace cloth. The centerpiece was a beautiful cake decorated bout the base with carnations. The wedding party included the bride and groom, Mr. and Mrs. Orville Strimple, Mr. and Mrs. George De Graff, sister and brother-in-law of the bride, Mrs. Minnie Stockman, sister of the bride, Mr. and Mrs. Howard French of Rossville, and Rev. Jones. Mr. and Mrs. Burton plan to make, their home in Meckling, South Dakota.

  Obituary- Burton, Jessie Jessie Attebury Burton ROSSVILLE -- Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Rossville for Jessie Attebury Burton, 98, Bolivar, Mo., who died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1993, at a Bolivar nursing home. She was born Dec. 18, 1894, in Carrol in Greenwood County, the daughter of Frank E. and Clara Strausbaugh Strimple. She grew up in the Rossville area and later lived in Meckling, S.D., and Fair Play and Buffalo, Mo., before she moved to Bolivar. Mrs. Burton was a life member of the United Methodist Church in Rossville where she taught Sunday school classes more than 40 years. She was a 50-year member of Amaryllis Chapter No. 321 of Order of Eastern Star in Rossville. She was married to Thomas H. Attebury in September 1915 in Rossville. He died Sept. 6, 1952. She was married to Buel Burton in June 1954 in Topeka. He died in September 1979. Survivors include four stepdaughters, Jeanne Barta, Napa, Calif., Carol Hubert, Vermillion, S.D., and Dianne Finks, Arlington, Va., and Norma F. Prough, San Diego, Calif.; two stepsons, Harold Burton, Meckling, S.D., and Leroy Burton, Maitland, Mo.; 23 stepgrandchildren; and several stepgreat-grandchildren. Mrs. Burton was cremated. Inurnment will be in Rossville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church in Rossville. Murray Funeral Home in Bolivar, Mo., is in charge of arrangements.
