Emmett man found slain,
suspect held
EMMETT — An 59-year-old man was found slain inside his home here Saturday night and his former son-in-law has been arrested in connection with the death, Pottawatomie County authorities reported.

The victim was identified by Sheriff Dean Taylor as Wesley Jessepe, who apparently was beaten to death with an object and kicked. Taylor said his department has two possible murder weapons in custody, but declined to identify the objects.

Taylor said Stanley Kelly, 37, Emmett, was being held in the Pottawatomie County Jail without bond Sunday on a charge of second-degree murder in connection with Jessepe’s death.

The two men “have had problems in the past,’’ Taylor said. “We think they just got into it yesterday.”

The sheriff said the slaying apparently occurred about 5 p.m., but the body was discovered about 10 p.m. He added Kelly was arrested about an hour later at his home.

Dr. Thomas Walsh, Onaga, a Pottawatomie County deputy coroner, said Sunday it appeared Jessepe died of head injuries. An autopsy was performed Sunday in Topeka, but results unavailable.

Emmett is on K-63 in eastern Pottawatomie County near the Jackson County line.

Jessepe was born Feb. 2, 1922, at Delia, the son of Charles and Susan Zow-Num-Ke Jessepe. He lived in Emmett 33 years. He was a retired farmer.

Jessepe was an Army veteran of World War 11, having served in the Pacific theater. He was awarded the Silver Star medal. He was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi and the Drum religion in the tribe.

He was married to Mary Jo Magnauck. She died Aug. 9, 1974.

Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Juanita Allen, Mrs. Debra Shields, Mary Jo Jessepe Jr., Carol Jean Jessepe, Mrs. Jennifer Kelly, and Mrs. Linda Flores, all of Dallas; a son, Ronald Jessepe, Dallas; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Miller, 1422 N. Madison, Topeka; two brothers, Thomas Jessepe, Browning, Mont., and LeRoy Jessepe, Topeka; and 18 grandchildren.

Indian religious drum services will be Tuesday evening at the Community Building west of Mayetta. Burial will be Wednesday afternoon at Dance Ground Cemetery west of Mayetta. Mercer Funeral Home at Holton is in charge of arrangements.
