Joe Irvin Cottle
Joe Irvin Cottle, 73, North Richland Hills, Texas, formerly of Topeka, died Saturday, April 19, 1997, at home. He was a colonel in the Air Force before he retired.
He was born Oct. 19, 1923, in Wamego, the son of Joseph M. and Ella Brashear Cottle. He lived in Wamego 10 years be¬fore he moved to Topeka. He attended Topeka High School and was graduated from Salina High School. He was graduat¬ed from Washburn University and received a masters degree in education from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.
He was a B-17 pilot and flew missions in Europe during World War II. He was a C-130 pilot and flew missions during the Korean War and Vietnam War. While in the military, he taught four years at Oregon State University in Corvallis. He spent 33 years in military service before he retired in 1977.
He was a member of a Masonic Lodge in Corvallis, Ore., Scottish Rite bodies in Eugene, Ore., and the Shrine in Portland, Ore.
He was married to Betty Lou Wilson Aug. 19, 1948, in Salina. She survives.
Other survivors include three brothers, Raymond Cottle, Wamego, Don Cottle, Wentzville, Mo., and Robert Cottle, Casa Verde, Ariz.; and two sisters, Reva Blanchard, Topeka, and Darlene Flickinger, Euless, Texas.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rossville Cemetery in Ross¬ville. Mr. Cottle will lie in state from 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Funeral Home in Topeka.
Biggers Funeral Home in Fort Worth is in charge of Texas arrangements.
