Obituary

Arthur Elliott Strimple was born near Batavia, Clermont Co., Ohio, April 12th, 1831. When he was about 5 or 6 years old his parents moved to Indiana where they lived for 7 years. They then moved on further west to Lawrence Co., Ill., going on to Crawford Co. Ill., the next year where he made his home until coming to Kansas. In August of the year 1852 one of his brothers took very sick and asked him to pray for him before he died. But as he had never prayed for himself he could not pray for his brother. But this brother's death and burial had such an effect on him he was led to repentance. He joined the M.E. church the same month, but was not converted until the following September at a prayer meeting held at his father's home. His was a wonderful conversion as a light shown around him. Others saw this light which resulted in the conversion of six others the same night. He was appointed class leader in less than a year after uniting with the church and led two classes for several years. He was class leader in different places at least forty years of his life. He was given an Exhorters license during the winter of 1864 and for several years made a trip around the circuit of eleven preaching points once every quarter. He also served in the capacity of steward many years of his life. He enlisted in the 5th Illinois Cav. in Sept. 1861, and was mustered in Company F. in October. He served his country three years and one month and was honorably discharged October 14th, 1864, from the Invalid Corps at St. Louis, Mo. His campaign was spent in Arkansas, Missouri and Mississippi. He was at Vicksburg during all the siege.

On February 12th, 1867, he was married to Mellissa Groves Hicks, of Hardinsville, Crawford Co., Illinois. To this union ten children were born, eight sons and two daughters, all of whom with the mother are living: Nelson, Edmund, Augustus Strimple, of Collinsville, Oklahoma, Charles of Seattle, Wash., Arthur, of Walla Walla, Wash., Paul, of Millersburg, Ind., Bert of Altoona, Kans., and Roy, of Moran, Kans., and Mrs. Clarance Smith and Mrs. C.H. Saunders, of Eurkea, Kansas.

In the fall of 1870 he came with his family to Kansas, locating at Rossville, Shawnee Co., where they lived for eleven years moving from there to Pottawatomie Co., living there two years. In October 1883, he moved to Greenwood county locating on a farm near Carroll where he and his family lived until March 1902 when they moved to Eureka where he since resided. The above sketch was dictated by him April 23, 1915, and taken down by his daughter.

During the past eight or nine weeks Mr. Strimple was confined to his home and most of the time to his bed. He was an intense sufferer a portion of the time, but on Friday evening, June 25, seemingly without any pain, he passed peacefully away. He had reached the age of 84 years, 2 months and 13 days. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, June 27 at 4 o'clock at the M.E. church conducted by his pastor who was assisted by Rev. C.R. Rice. The body was laid to rest in Greenwood cemetery Eureka.
