Obituary- Cowan, Kenneth 1

Kenneth Cowan
SILVER LAKE — Kenneth V. Cowan, 79, Silver Lake, died Thursday, April 17, 2003, at his home.
Mr. Cowan farmed in the Rossville area and worked in the data corrections department of Santa Fe Railway until retiring in 1983. He served in the Army in the 621 Port Co. 491 Port Battalion in the Pacific theater at New Guinea during World War II.
He was born Oct. 23, 1923, in Delia, to Lloyd V. and Marie DeBacker Cowan. He graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1941.
Mr. Cowan was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville, Knights of Columbus Council No. 534 in Topeka, Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion in Rossville and Philip Billard Post No. 1650 of the Veterans of For¬eign Wars in Topeka. He also was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, the XYZ Club in Silver Lake, Senior Citizens of Silver Lake and past presi¬dent of the Silver Lake High School Alumni Asso¬ciation. He was a member of the Shawnee County Farm Bureau and Retired Santa Fe Oldtimers.
He married Mary Mattan on Feb. 12, 1943, in Delia. She survives.
Other survivors include a son, Mark V. Cowan, Kansas City, Mo.; three daughters, Diana Elevier and Denise Denton, both of Silver Lake, and Vicki Wilson, Holton; a sister, Betty Entsminger, Tope¬ka; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville. Burial with military graveside honors conducted by a Fort Riley funeral detail will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in St. Marys. Mr. Cowan will lie in state at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home in St. Marys after 3 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will be until 4:30 p.m., when a rosary will be recited.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mid¬land Hospice or to the Silver Lake Senior Citizen Center and sent in care of the funeral home, 714 Maple St., St. Marys, 66536.
