Death Settled Divorce Case -- Pathetic Reply of Husband

One of the many divorce cases which are pending in the district court has been settled. Death made the settlement. It was the Stumbaugh case. The plaintiff, Mrs. Mary B. Stumbaugh; died last night after a long illness caused by cancerous growth.

Mrs. Stumbaugh brought suit for a divorce from her husband, George W. Stumbaugh, only a few days ago, charging that he refused to provide her with medical aid or care although he was abundantly able to do so. For this reason she had herself removed to the home of a friend.

As Mrs. Stumbaugh lay dying the attorneys for her husband were drawing their answer to her petition, and it was filed today. In it Mr. Stumbaugh says:
"The plaintiff has always conducted herself toward this defendant as a faithful and dutiful wife, and this defendant further alleges that said plaintiff was always loving and kind toward this defendant and her son, S.F. Stumbaugh, and did everything that a wife and mother should do in her condition of health. That her hands and feet and heart never grew weary waiting upon this defendant when he was sick, nor was she ever derelict in her duty to her only child, S.F. Stumbaugh, the other defendant in this case.

Mr. Stumbaugh then admits the truth of his wife's statements concerning their property, giving his wife all credit possible for its accumulation. He closes his answer by saving that he does not believe his wife applied for the divorce of her own free will, but was either out of her mind or was unduly informed by outside parties to do so. -State Journal, Nov. 17
