Obituary- Zlatnik, Velma 2
Velma F. Zlatnik
Velma F. Zlatnik, Delia, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007, at the Midland Hospice House following a courageous battle against leukemia.
She was born Nov. 27, 1928, near Delia, the daughter of Evan and Louise Hayden Lewelling. She attended High Prairie Grade School and graduated from Soldier Rural High School in 1946. Velma attended Kansas State College and obtained an emergency certificate and taught school at Cedar Hill and High Prairie in Jackson county and Forest Bluff in Shawnee county.
Mrs. Zlatnik worked for USD No. 321 for 27 years as a cook-manager and later as a para in the Interrelated Resource room at Rossville Grade School. She was a member of the Delia Presbyterian Church for 59 years where she taught Sunday school and Bible school. She also was the church pianist for many of those years. Mrs. Zlatnik was selected as the Jackson County Extension Homemaker of the Year in 1988 while she was a member of the Delia Up & Atom Extension Unit. She was an excellent cook and was well known for her pies and breads.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Evan D. Lewelling in 1963.
On Aug. 8, 1948, she was united in marriage to J. Laverne Zlatnik. He survives on the farm where he and Velma lived all of their married life. They were the parents of three children, Mark (Linda) Zlatnik, Shell Knob, Mo., Carolyn (Terry) Orozco, Topeka, and Alan (Tammy) Zlatnik, Rossville; seven grandchildren, Julie (Gary) Spring, Sheila Podrebarac, Scott (Isabel) Zlatnik, Melissa (Kelly) Smith, Joe Zlatnik, Duane Zlatnik and Lexi Zlatnik; seven greatgrandchildren; five step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 29, at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys.
Interment was in the Delia Cemetery.
