Obituary- Harden, Marie

MARIE JEAN HARDEN
Marie Jean Harden died Monday, Aug. 14, 2006 at a family home following a stroke.

She most recently resided on the island of Kauai, but lifetime adventures also found her in Albuquerque, NM, and for a time on the island of Bali.

She was born May 6, 1932 to Rudolph and Wilma Krasny who lived on a rural Delia farm. She graduated from Rossville High School in 1950 and worked in Topeka for Bell Telephone before marrying Bob Harden on May 17, 1953. Three children, Michelle, Doug and Darrel were born to them while they resided in Topeka on West 10th St.

In 1959, they moved to a farm west of Rossville. A second daughter, Joyce was born there. In May 1960 a tornado destroyed their home. Marie was able to get three children to the cellar and then went back up for the baby who was secured in a highchair with a dishtowel. All survived without injury. A new home was built on that site. Another daughter, Andrea, was born to the family.

Marie had many artistic gifts. She was a seamstress, making imaginative costumes for her children, uniforms for Rossville and St. Mary’s cheerleaders and draperies for Karlan’s Furniture. She shared wonderful paintings with family and friends.

For many years she kept scorebooks for her children’s baseball and softball teams. Under her direc¬tion the family raised and sold the best extra-sweet corn for many years. Her enthusiasm for mentoring youth led her to be a room mother for at least 15 years and a community leader for the Rossville Rustlers 4-H Club. She was a great cook and encouraged her family to lead healthy lifestyles.

She was a valued employee in the optometry offices of Dr. Clifford Goodman and Drs. William and Diana Carriger. Later she attended many bourses in the area of massage therapy and shared her interest in the healing arts with a wide variety of clientele.

She is remembered by her family for being a hard worker, a joyful player and as one with unending determination when achieving a goal.

Memorials may be sent to Piper Funeral Home.
