Dorothy J. Davis

Dorothy J. Davis, 62, Willard, died Sunday June 17, 1990 at Rossville Valley Manor.

She was born August 5, 1927, at Rossville, the daughter of Emial and Carrie Cerny Kovar.

She was married to Stanley A. Davis, January 31, 1947, in Topeka. He survives.

She lived all of her live in the Rossville/Willard area.

She taught school two years at Walnut Hill School north of Grove from 1945-1946. She then remained at home to raise her family. She worked at Sears from 1957 to 1975, when she retired.

She was a member of the Rossville Presbyterian Church, a charter member of the Jimmy Lilliard Post 31 Auxiliary, and ZCBJ Lodge #128, Rossville.

Other survivors include two daughters Carolyn Sage, Topeka, and Beverly Martinek, Branson, Mo.; three grandchildren; and her father, Emial Kovar, Rossville.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Rossville Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Davis will lie in state after 4 p.m. Tuesday (today) at Verschelden Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. She will lie in state at the church from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Just a year ago, I said good-bye to you. Dorothy, you were a joy to me for over 43 years as my wife, loving mother to our two children and grandmother to our three grandchildren.

One of the most dreaded sentences a patient can hear is, “You have cancer.” These words bring a chill to the heart. An enthusiastic believer in Christ, Dorothy Davis lost her battle with cancer; however, her life demonstrated that even though the physical body may be destroyed by disease, the spirit can remain triumphant.

Cancer is So Limited….
It Cannot Cripple A Love; It Cannot Shatter Hope; It Cannot Corrode Faith; It Cannot Eat Away Peace; It Cannot Destroy Confidence; It Cannot Kill Friendship; It Cannot Shut Out Memories; It Cannot Silence Courage; It Cannot Invade the Soul; It Cannot Reduce Eternal Life; It Cannot Lessen the Power of the Resurrection.

If an incurable disease has invaded your life, refuse to let it touch your spirit. Your body can be severely afflicted, and life may become a great struggle. If you keep on trusting in God’s love, however, your spirit will remain strong.

The many friends, family members, and acquaintances who visited us to show respect, to say good-bye, to show their love, and to be supportive of me during the past year represent the greatest tribute that anyone can be paid. I have been deeply touched as I realized just how many lives were influenced by Dorothy. The many memorials, kind notes and words that I have received are indicative of the high esteem people had for her. Carolyn Sage, Beverly Martinek and their families, and Dorothy’s father, Emial Kovar, join me in thanking each of you for your love. God bless each of you.
