Obituary- Erickson, Charles 1

‘Dee’ Erickson dies in Topeka
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home for Charles “Dee” Erickson, 87, 1044 Randolph. He died Sunday, Sept. 22, at a Topeka hospital.
Mr. Erickson coached seven years at Fort Scott Junior College, then coached from 1931 to 1936 at Ottawa University. He became basketball coach and assistant football coach at Washburn University in 1936, and served as both basketball coach and athletic director at Washburn from 1942 to 1946.
Mr. Erickson helped organize the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, and served as its president in 1944. He ranks fourth among Washburn basketball coaches with 81 victories and led Washburn to the Central Intercollegiate Conference championship in 1946, his final year of coaching there. His teams also appeared in three NAIA Tournaments.
In 1947, Mr. Erickson opened a sporting goods business at Hays. In 1951 he returned to Topeka, where he continued in the sporting goods business until 1961.
From 1961 to 1965 he was principal of Richland Grade School at Richland in southeast Shawnee County. In 1965 he received the National Physical Fitness Leadership Award for his work with youth fitness.
