Francis ‘Fritz’ DeBacker
Francis Hermes “Fritz” DeBacker, 82, 2218 Wilmington Court, died Wednesday, March 19, at a Salina hospital.
Mr. DeBaker [sic] was a rate clerk for Santa Fe Rail¬way 47 years. He retired in 1969.
He was born May 6, 1903, at St. Marys, the son of Hermes and Elizabeth Fischer DeBacker. He lived in St. Marys be-fore he moved to Topeka in 1922.
Mr. DeBacker was a member of the Catholic Church of the Assump¬tion and an honorary life member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 534, which he joined in May 1928. He served in many Knights of Columbus offices including state secretary of the Fourth Degree eight years. He also was a member of James W. Gibbons Assembly of the Fourth De¬gree and had served as an honor guard for Francis Cardinal Spell¬man.
He was a member of the St. Vin¬cent de Paul Society and served as librarian 45 years. He also was a member of PACE at Hayden High School and was a member of the Santa Fe Old Timers Club and Brotherhood of Railway and Airline Clerks Local No. 427.
Mr. DeBacker was active in the Democratic Party and was a Demo¬cratic precinct committeeman many years.
He was a former member of Noc¬turnal Adoration Society.
He was married to Mary L. Halloran June 23, 1926, in Topeka. She survives.
Other survivors include a sister, Mrs. Edna Hartley, Topeka.
Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Catho¬lic Church of the Assumption. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mr. DeBaker [sic] will lie in state from 2 until 9 p.m. Friday at Brennan Fu¬neral Home where rosaries will be recited by the Legion of Mary at 3 p.m., the parish at 7 p.m., Daughters of Isabella at 7:30 p.m., and Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus at 7:45 p.m. Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Catholic Church of the Assumption, 204 W. 8th, 66603.
