Hugh L. ‘Jiggs’ Fairbanks
Hugh L “Jiggs” Fairbanks passed away Aug. 23, 2011, at St. Marys Community Hospital.
He was born Oct. 23, 1926, at Emmett, the son of Frank and Rena Ethel Blaylock Fairbanks. He grew up in the Emmett community and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Hugh retired from the federal government as a livestock inspector. Through the years Hugh enjoyed fishing, metal detecting, walking and picking black walnuts that he shared with all he knew. He attended the Rossville Christian Church and was a member of Jimmie Lillard Post 31 of the American Legion in Rossville.
On June 18, 1948, he was united in marriage to Geneva A. Keller at Topeka. She preceded him in death on March 27, 2008. They resided in Rossville for more than 30 years before moving to Atria Hearthstone in Topeka. For the past year Hugh had been a resident of St. Marys Manor Nursing Home. A son, Philip Douglas, also preceded him in death in January 1952, along with his brothers, George, Joe, Douglas, Charles, Frank and Gerald Fairbanks, and sisters Ruth and Rena.
Survivors include a son, Douglas Fairbanks and wife, Donola, of Delia; a daughter, Cherrie Argabright and husband, Norm, of Topeka; his sister, Doris Lange, of Apple Valley, Calif.; grandchildren, Holly Wehner, Brad Fairbanks, Ryan Fairbanks, Jason DeBacker and Travis DeBacker; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Fairbanks bequeathed his body to the University of Kansas Medical Center. Memorial services were Sept. 1 at Rossville Christian Church. Interment will be at a later date in the St. Clere Cemetery, Emmett.
