His ailment had been of several years duration and immediately following the operation his chances for recovering his normal health appeared favorable. This hope was of short duration, however, and a few weeks after returning home he was compelled to remain at home and his condition grew graver each week.
Mr. Berkey was born at Sipesville, Pa., May 6, 1860, and at the age of 16 came west to Kansas in company of a brother and an uncle. These latter returned to the old home but Mr. Berkey remained. On February 28, 1886, he was united in marriage to Miss Ellen Maust, at Falls City, Neb. Mr. and Mrs. Berkey lived for 3 years on farms in the vicinity of Rossville and in 1889 moved into this city where they have resided since. The last few years of his life had been devoted to active farming in this vicinity. In his other ventures at various periods of his life he had shown marked ability for handling crews of workman, in bridge work, with threshing crews, on road work, or whatever the job might be.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Methodist church with which he had affiliated, conducted by the Rev. H.L. Nelson, of Topeka.
Beside his wife he is survived by three children, Guy, of Russell; Charles, of Rossville and Mrs. Edith Zickefoose of Stapleton, Neb., thirteen grand-children; four brothers, Eli, of Johnstown, Pa.; Isaac, Somerset, Pa.; Rev. Filson Berkey, Scottsville, Pa.; Rev. Abe Berkey, Lindsburg, Pa. and one sister, Mrs. Kate Kaiser, of Tustin, Calif.
