Charles Gillum

STRONG CITY — Charles “Charlie" Gillum, 75, Strong City, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, at his home.

Mr. Gillum owned and operated Charlie Gillum Hearing Aid Service in Emporia, Wamego and Manhattan. He was a certified hearing-aid specialist and served many people in south-central Kansas. He also had worked in home construction until 1999.

He joined the Navy at the age of 16 but was discharged when officials learned his age. He reenlisted following his 18th birthday and was a veteran of World War Il and the Korean War. He was a seaman 2nd class petty officer aboard, the USS Mississippi.

He was born Dec. 13, 1927, in Sandy Hook, Ohio, to Andrew and Henrietta Hutchinson Gillum. He graduated from high school in Ohio.

Mr. Gillum was a member of The First United Methodist Church in Emporia, Kiwanis, Rotary, 4-H, Alma Booster Club and other organizations.

He married Natalie Skaggs on Sept. 15, 1979, in Wamego. She survives.

Other survivors include six sons, Dr. Charlie Gillum Jr., Manhattan, Dr. Harold Gillum, Roseville, Calif., Mike Gillum, Montoursville, Pa., Scott Gillum, Maple Hill, and Mike McComas and Todd Jones, both of Wichita; five daughters, Susan Werth, San Antonio, Jamie Hildreth, Meriden, Kim Gillum, Silver Lake, Lisa Soetebier, Americus, and Ranata Gillum Emporia; two sisters, Charlotte Gillum and Louise Gillum, both of Ohio; 22 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Gillum was preceded in death by three grandsons, Spencer Gillum, and twins, Adam McComas and Evan McComas.

Mr. Gillum was cremated. A celebration of life service for Mr. Gillum will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at The First United Methodist Church in Emporia. Inurnment will be at Hillside Cemetery in the Toledo Township. A Fort Riley honor guard will conduct military honors at the graveside.
