Rossville-Topeka Banker, Clarence E. Gresser, Dies
Clarence Ernest Gresser, 80, longtime banker in Topeka and Rossville, died Wednesday night in a Topeka nursing home.
The son of Fredrick and Christine Gresser, he was born March 11, 1883, at Atkinson, Ill. At the age of 16 he came to Kansas and began working in the old Citizens State Bank in North Topeka, where his brother, Ed Gresser, was cashier.
Clarence E. Gresser spent a few years at the Central National Bank in Topeka and in 1909 organized the People’s State Bank at Rossville. He remained with the Rossville bank until he retired as president about five years ago.
He served two terms as mayor of Rossville and several terms on the city council, grade school board and high school board.
He was Sunday school superintendent of the Rossville Methodist Church 17 years and church treasurer many years. He was past master of the Rossville Masonic Lodge.
He and Leonore Miller, daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. J. K. Miller of Topeka, were married in 1907.
Survivors include his widow; two sons, Joe M. Gresser of Rossville, and Don F. Gresser, 1534 W. 17th; five granddaughters; one grandson; one great-granddaughter; and a brother, Rollin Gresser of Brady, Tex.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Methodist Church at Rossville with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka. The Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
