Founder of Peoples State Bank Dies At Age 80
Services for Clarence Ernest Gresser, 80, former Topeka banker and founder of the Peoples State Bank at Rossville, were at 10 a. m. Saturday in the Rossville Methodist Church. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Topeka.
He died Wednesday night in a Topeka nursing home where he had lived for several months.
He was born March 11, 1883, at Atkinson, Ill. He came to Kansas at the age of 16 and began working in the old Citizens State Bank of North Topeka, where his brother, The late Ed Gresser, was cashier. He also worked several years at the former Central National Bank of Topeka.
C.E. Gresser organized the bank at Rossville in l909. He retired as president about five years ago.
He served two terms as mayor of Rossville and served several terms on the city council, elementary and high school boards. He was Sunday school superintendent of Rossville Methodist Church 17 years and church treasurer many years. He was a past master of Rossville Masonic Lodge.
His wife, the former Leonore Miller, daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. J. K. Miller of Topeka, survives. Among other survivors are two sons, Joe M. Gresser, Rossville, and Don F. Gresser, Topeka; a brother, Rollin Gresser, Brady, Texas; six grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.
Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Marvin Davis, Everett Pelfrey, Rolland Parr, Harold Reser, Homer Reid, and Junior Dannefer.
