Bergus J. Hahn
Bergus J. Hahn, 13 years old, son of Mr. S. E. Hahn, died Saturday evening about 8 p.m. in the Silverthorne hospital, Topeka, where he had been rushed early in the afternoon, following his accidental shooting by Carl Traverse, who had accompanied the boy on a hunting expedition.

The shooting occurred on the Mason place east of town. Bergus, the Traverse boy and Clarence Stamp, had returned from “Happy Hollow” and stopped north of the Mason barn to play. Traverse desired to shoot the rifle, a 22 caliber and it was loaded for him. Instead of turning the barrel in the air, it seemed the boy pulled the trigger while the Hahn lad was in front of the barrel and he received the charge about two inches below the heart, the bullet lodging in the right side.

The boy was hurriedly brought to town in one of the Heath boy’s car by Heath and Clay Mason. Drs. Smith and Miller then hurried him to the Topeka hospital in C. E. Cless’s car. Archie Cless driving. Death followed a few hours later. The body was brought home Sunday.

Bergus was born near Rossville February 26, 1910. He was a great favorite with his schoolmates and one of the brightest pupils in the sixth grade, which is taught by Miss Bowes. The members of the classes in her room attended the funeral in a body and were grief stricken over the loss of their schoolmate.

Rev. H. P. Basquin preached a beautiful sermon at the funeral which was held in the Methodist church Monday afternoon. Bergus was one of the honored members of the Junior League of the church and very much interested in the work. He was also a member of the boy scouts and Junior Lodge of the S. B. A. The body was interred in Rossville Cemetery.

He is survived by his mother., Mrs. S. E. Hahn, four brothers, George, Clarence and Marshall of Rossville. Albert, of Silver Lake.


We, as dear ones of Bergus Hahn would like to correct a mistake made in last week’s issue of the Reporter. Bergus never did run with the Traverse boy for a companion and the gun was not loaded for him to shoot. It laid on the ground and while Clarence Stamp and he were engaged in talking, standing face to face to each other, Traverse picked up the gun and shot Bergus, neither boy noticing him until Bergus said “Now you have shot me” and grabbed his side.

Bergus never walked. He remained there while Clarence took the guns and ran for help. Traverse started to follow but he turned around and sent him back to Bergus to stay till he got help. While we all are grieved beyond words to explain, we all know he was a dear little soul, loved dearly by everybody and we all feel assured he is safe in the arms of Jesus where there can nothing befall him. A dear little angel there awaiting to welcome any one of the dear ones he left when he went away.
