Mrs. Wilma Harshbarger
Mrs. Wilma Terry Harshbarger, 88, 1205 W. 29th, died Friday, Jan. 11, at a Topeka retirement home.
Mrs. Harshbarger worked at Security Benefit Life Insurance Co. when she retired in 1961. She had taught at Seabrook Elementary School from 1944 to 1949 and previously at Menninger Southard School. She also was a substitute teacher of English and Latin in Topeka public high schools and had taught Latin and physiology at Delia High School from 1920 to 1921. She also taught at Highland Park High School from 1919 to 1920.
While in college she taught fourth through sixth grades at Seabrook Grade School during the 1913 to 1914 school year, and history and English at Scranton High School during the 1916 through 1918 school years.
She was born Jan. 12, 1896, at Richland, the daughter of William Reilly and Lida Harr Terry. She was reared at Richland and attended Lawrence High School one year. She was graduated from Topeka High School in 1913 and from Washburn College at Topeka in 1919.
Mrs. Harshbarger was a member of Central Congregational Church, superintendent of the Primary Sunday School Department, member of Women’s Fellowship, Group XI, Altruist Club and other church groups. She most recently operated the Sheldon Memorial Study Exhibit in Gage Park.
She also was a member of the Washburn Alumni Association, the American Association of University Women, the Delta Gamma Mothers Club and was a precinct committee-woman.
She was married to Frank V. Harshbarger June 1, 1921, at Topeka. He died in 1944.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Latas, Wichita; a son, Frank V. Harshbarger Jr., Livermore, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Brewster Place Chapel. Private family graveside services will be held in Mount Hope Cemetery. Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
