Obituary- Hawks, William

Wm. Hawks Dead

William Hawks died last Tuesday afternoon after an illness of several months duration, death being caused by cancer of the liver. The end had been foreseen by his family and relatives for several weeks and everything possible was done to make his last moments as comfortable as the nature of his ailment would permit. William Wallace Hawks was born in Lucas county, Iowa, July 4, 1857 and at the time of his death was 54 years and 9 months old. Mr. Hawks moved with his parents to Republic county, Kansas, in the fall of 1870. At the age of thirteen he was converted and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church. On Oct. 9, 1876, he was united in marriage to Sarah Elizabeth Zook. Later he and his wife united with the Society of Friends. In 1895 Mr. and Mrs. Hawks moved to Rossville and have since resided here. His kindly and genial disposition and his constant endeavor to live a Christian life early gained for him the respect and esteem od the entire community. Mr. Hawks identified himself with the Presbyterian church upon his arrival here and has always been a worker in every one of the church's various activities. Sometime before his death, he had written for a letter from his own organization to become a member of the Presbyterian church.

Besides his devoted wife and daughter, he leaves an aged mother, three brothers and three sisters. At his bedside during this last hours were his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Zook, of Rossville, his brother; A.J. Hawks of Gentry, Ark. and H.F. Hawks of Wymore, Neb., his sisters Mrs. W.C. McCracken of Cuba, Ks. and Mrs. W.H. Williamson of Haddam, Kansas.

The funeral was held today in Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. Crawford and interment made in the Rossville cemetery. Out-of-town relatives here for the funeral were: A.J. Hawks, Gentry, Ark.; H.F. Hawks, Wymore, Neb.; Mrs. W.H. Williamson, Haddam, Kan.; Mrs. Jennie McCracken, Cuba, Kan.; Peter Zook, Johnson, Neb.; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wert, Topeka, Dan Taylor, Marshalltown, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. C.L. DeLay, Cuba, Kan.; Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Young, Topeka; Mr. and Mrs. Truman Payne, Grantville, Kan
