Obituary- Hayden, Laverne 2
Laverne 'Pop’ Hayden
VALLEY FALLS — Laverne 'Pop” Hayden, 77, Route 2, Valley Falls, died Monday, Dec. 31, 1990, at a Topeka hospital.
Mr. Hayden was a farmer and horse and mule trader. He had worked for Topeka Mill and Elevator and W.A.L. Thompson Hardware, both in Topeka, and for Summerfeldt Hardware in Valley Falls.
He was born Jan. 13, 1913, at Edgerton, Mo., the son of Jesse and Martha Ellen Perkins Hayden. He moved to Kansas at an early age. He lived west of Holton before he moved to Valley Falls in 1943. He lived in the Coal Creek community north of Valley Falls since 1952.
Mr. Hayden was a member of Crescent IOOF Lodge No. 86 in Valley Falls and was a charter member and past president of the Valley Falls Saddle Club.
He was married to Lorene Elkinton April 24, 1937, at Circleville. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Galen 'Bud” Hayden, Valley Falls, and Ted Hayden, Sabetha; two daughters, Martha Gilleece and Kay Cook, both of Valley Falls; two brothers, Glenn Hayden, Kansas City, Mo., and James Hayden, Payson, Ill.; two sisters, Louise Lewellinq Rossville, and Ruth Smith, Topeka; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Nellis Funeral Home in Valley Falls. Burial will be in Holton Cemetery. Friends and relatives will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Valley Falls Rescue Squad and sent in care of the funeral home.
