Henry ‘Whistle’ Beseau
ST. MARYS — Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Meth¬odist Church here for Henry Wilfred “Whistle” Beseau, 65, St. Marys. He died Saturday, July 20, at a Wamego hospital.
Mr. Beseau was city manager for St. Marys from 1970 until he retired May 31, 1985. He served on the St. Marys City Commission from 1959 to 1968, and was assistant city man¬ager for St. Marys from 1968 to 1970. He also served as St. Marys police chief 1 1/2 years.
He operated a dry cleaning busi¬ness at St. Marys from 1953 to 1973, and was vice president of Big Lakes Developmental Center Inc., at Man¬hattan.
He was born May 22, 1920, at St. Clere township in eastern Pottawa¬tomie County, the son of Harry Wilfred and Mary Frances Smith Beseau. He spent most of his life in St. Marys.
Mr. Beseau served in the Navy as a chief petty officer in the hospital corps during World War II. He was a member of a Navy choir at San Die¬go, Calif.
He had been a member of St. Marys Volunteer Fire Department since 1956, was a member and past master of Pottawatomie Lodge No. 52, AF&AM, a member of Artha Chapter No. 238, Order of Eastern Star, and a member of the United Methodist Church, for which he had been chairman of the board of the church council, all at St. Marys. He was also a member of Jimmie Lil- lard Post No. 31 of the American Legion at Rossville, and the Kansas Peace Officers Association.
He married Mary M. Woody March 16, 1942. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, James W. Beseau, St. Marys, and Wayne Beseau, Topeka; two daugh¬ters, Mrs. Jolyne Wehner, Rossville, and Mrs. Kathleen Sack, St. Marys; a brother, Donald Beseau, St. Marys; three sisters, Mrs. Betty Ruth Raine, Maple Hill, Mrs. Twylah Lytle, St. Marys, and Mrs. Janis Fryberger, Highland, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery at St. Marys. Relatives and friends will meet from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Verschelden Fu¬neral Home, St. Marys, where Mr. Beseau will lie in state after 2 p.m. today. He will also lie in state one 1 hour before service time at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart As-sociation or the church.
