Obituary- Hurley, John
John H. Hurley
ROSSVILLE - John Henry Hurley, 68, Rossville, died Wednesday, May 29, at a Topeka hospital.
Mr. Hurley was a licensed funeral director and embalmer in Kansas and Missouri. He had worked for one year at Sleeper Mortuary in Iola and owned and operated funeral homes in Harveyville, Galena and Rossville. He later was employed by Meierhoffer-Fleeman Funeral Home in St. Joseph, Mo., until he retired in 1975 for health reasons.
In later years he operated Hurleys Used Cars in Rossville.
He was born Nov. 28, 1916, at Moran, the son of Roy Thomas and Edith Prettyman Hurley. He moved to Iola in 1929 when his father was Allen County sheriff and was graduated from Iola High School in 1935. He attended Iola Junior College one year and was graduated from Williams Institute of Embalming in Kansas City, Kan., in 1937. He lived in Rossville from 1952 until 1962 and returned to Rossville in 1978.
Mr. Hurley was a member of the United Methodist Church in Rossville and a former member of various civic clubs.
He was married to Betsy Ross Feb. 11, 1939 in Kingman. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Linda Hudson, Rossville, and Mrs. Denise Millet, Kirksville, Mo.; a son, Roger Hurley, Silver Lake; his mother, Mrs. Edith Hurley, Rossville; and three grandŽsons.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Rossville. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery. Mr. Hurley will lie in state after 3 p.m. today at Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka where the family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. today.
