Obituary- James, Edward 1

Edward Thomas James was born in Talbot county, Maryland, August 27, 1830. Died at Rossville, Kansas, December 6, 1915. Age, 85 years 3 months and 9 days. He was the last surviving member of a family of three children, the sister having died in infancy and the brother, Lambert, two years ago. At the age of 22 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Stoker of Talbot County, Maryland. To this union five children were born. In 1857 the family moved to Indiana and in 1860 the death of his wife occurred. A few years later he married Sarah Radifer in Shelbyville, Ind., and to this union six children were born.

Shortly after the beginning of the war he enlisted in the Ninth Indiana Infantry, but after serving a short time he was granted a furlough owing to sickness. Later lie re-enlisted and served until the close of the war. In 1867, accompanied by several other families, an overland trio was made from Brazil, Ind. to Topeka, Kans. Twenty teams carried the party, which was six weeks en route. Mr. James located near Topeka, where he resided several years. In 1871 he moved to the farm west of Rossville, which he owned at the time of his death. In the early seven¬ties he served as county commissioner and from time to time held various county and township offices. He was thorough and efficient in the execution of all duties. When a young man he professed Christianity and became affiliated, with the United Brethren Church His life was one of devotion and faithfulness. He was true and upright, just and kind and bore the confidence and esteem of the many who knew him.



The death of his wife occurred in 1879. The surviving children are Mrs. Chettie Kassebaum, Silver Lake, Kans., Mrs. Lulu Kassebaum, Mrs. Amanda Reid, Charles, John, Sherman, Harvey and Harry James. Also twenty-four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Impressive funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. Mr. Crawford, assisted by Rev. Mr. Nelson of Topeka. The casket bearers were the five sons and a nephew. Robert D. James. The remains were laid to rest in the Rossville cemetery.
