Obituary- James, Leroy
Leroy S. James
LeRoy Sedgwick James was born September 9, 1879, and passed away September 12, 1935, at the age of 56 years and 3 days. Aside from a few years spent in Stafford county in his boyhood, all his life has been lived in this community, where he has been widely known as a painter and paperhanger.
He was united in marriage to Bertha Young on October 25, 1916. To this union one son, Joseph, was born. The widow and son survive him; also his father, C.W. James, and a sister, Mrs. Dora Lutz, both of San Francisco, California; and a brother, Ray of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
He was never very strong, and in the past year he has been failing, a fact which worried him considerably. He very much disliked the idleness forced upon him by conditions of recent years, but, like thousands of others, there seemed little he could do about it. He has always given freely and gladly of his time and interest to his home, and to community projects. He was a member of Hesperian Lodge, A.F. & A.M., and of the M.W.A.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church, Saturday afternoon September 14, in charge of Rev. Horton. Music was furnished by a quartet of ladies, Mrs. Peter Navarre, Mrs. A.G. Wallerstedt, Mrs. E.E. Witter, and Lorene Parr, with Miss Edith Higginbotham as accompanist. The following Masons acted as pallbearers: Frank Zickefoose, A.E. Stovall, A.N. White, William Hesse, Tom Attebury, and Hudson McCollough. Other Masons attended in a group and had charge of the services at the grave, under the leadership of John Rouse. Interment was in the Rossville cemetery.
Roy James passed away Wednesday night about mid-night in a Topeka hospital. While all have realized his critical condition, his passing came as a shock to the entire community.
