Delbert Jarvis
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church, here, for Delbert Jarvis, 76, Valley Falls. He died Friday, Dec. 30, at the scene of a two-vehicle accident east of Rossville.
Jarvis was born April 2, 1907, at Minorra, W. Va., the son of Caleb and Sarah Truman Jarvis. He moved to Missouri at an early age and was graduated from Cassville High School, Cassville, Mo.
He was graduated from Pittsburg State University and had taught high school social studies, industrial arts, and driver’s education. He also had coached basketball. He had taught at high schools in Weir, Nortonville, Meriden, and Valley Falls. He had lived in Valley Falls since 1956.
He was married to Gwendolyn E. Selves on June 3, 1933, at Mt. Vernon, Mo. She died July 2, 1980.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and served in the signal corps. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Valley Falls and had served as a church elder. He was a member of the Grahem-Herbers Post No. 304 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Valley Falls, and the Jefferson County Bicentennial Post No. 225 of the American Legion, Ozawkie. He was a retired member of the Kansas National Education Association.
Survivors include four daughters, Marilyn Tebow, Prairie Village, Betty Martin, Arkansas City, Marthanne Simons, Denver, and Kay Simons, Louisville, Ky.; a son, Edward Jarvis, Lawrence, and 11 grandchildren.
Burial will be in the Valley Falls Cemetery, with military graveside honors by the Grahem-Herbers Post No. 304 of the VFW. Friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Nellis-Hagge Funeral Home, Valley Falls. He will lie in state after 1 p.m. today at the funeral home.
