Ella Lee Jernigan
Ella Lee Jernigan, 94, Rossville, formerly of Harveyville, died Tuesday, February 2, 1999, at Rossville Valley Manor.

She was born June 8,1904, in the Fostoria community east of Burlingame, the daughter of Stuart D. and Minnie Elliott Bell. She grew up in Burlingame and graduated from Burlingame High School with the class of 1923.

She married Clyde Jernigan on October 17, 1927, at Newton. He died March 30, 1986. She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Karen Hensal on February 7, 1970.

She and her husband owned and operated a Western Auto store in Great Bend during the late 1940s and 1950s. They moved to Harveyville where they farmed for many years until they retired and moved to Osage City.

She was a former member of Aerie No. 58, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Topeka. She also was a former member of Fairplain Grange No. 1719, Burlingame, the 101 Card Club, and Extension Homemakers Unit at Harveyville. She and her husband were active members of a saddle club at Great Bend when they lived in the community.

Survivors include one daughter, Lyla Lee Hensal, Hemphill, TX; one son, W.E. Jernigan, Oberlin; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

Her service was Friday at the Burlingame Federated Church. Burial was in Burlingame Cemetery.

ROSSVILLE — Ella Lee Jernigan, 94, Rossville, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, at a Rossville nursing home.

Mrs. Jernigan and her husband owned and operated a Western Auto Store in Great Bend in the 1940s and 1950s. They later farmed near Harveyville for many years

She was born June 8, 1904, in the Fostoria Community, the daughter of Stuart D. and Minnie Elliott Bell. She was raised in Burlingame, and graduated from Burlingame High School in 1923. She had lived in Osage City before she moved to Rossville.

Mrs. Jernigan was a former member of Aerie No. 58 of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Topeka, Fairplain Grange No. 1719 at Burlingame, the 101 Card Club and a Saddle Club in Great Bend.

Survivors include a daughter, Lyla Lee Hensal, Hemphill, Texas; a son, W.E. Jernigan, Oberlin; 14 grandchildren; 24 greatgrandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Burlingame Federated Church. Burial will be in Burlingame Cemetery. Mrs. Jernigan will lie in state from 1 p.m. to service time Friday at the church.
