Obituary- Johnson, Troy 3

Boy struck, killed by falling bleachers
By TIM HRENCHIR
Capital-Journal staff writer
The 10-year-old son of Rossville High School’s principal died at a Topeka hospital Saturday after wind blew a set of portable bleachers on top of him at the high school, Shawnee County sheriff’s authorities said.

Detective Mark Wanamaker said the boy, Troy L. Johnson, suffered crushing head injuries when he was struck by the aluminum bleachers. Dr. Roman Hiszczynskyj, deputy district coroner, was scheduled to perform an autopsy today.

Wanamaker said the accident oc-curred at about 4 p.m. Saturday when John Johnson, the principal, was measuring the set of bleachers with another man near the high school’s football field, east of the school building. The two men were trying to determine whether the bleachers could fit through a door into the high school, Wanamaker said.

The bleachers had been used for a state playoff football game that Rossville played Friday, and they were being considered for use inside the school in anticipation of an overflow crowd for a Saturday evening performance of "The Sound of Music.’’

wheels, Wanamaker said, when a strong gust of wind blew the bleachers down, striking the boy.

"At one point in time, he (Troy Johnson) wasn’t anywhere near them,” Wanamaker said. "Apparently when they weren’t looking, he had gotten in behind them.”

Troy Johnson was transported by
Medevac MidAmerica Ambulance to Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Wanamaker said the boy had been living with his mother, who he said is divorced from John Johnson. He still did not know late Saturday where the boy lived and went to school.

However, Rossville residents said the boy lived and attended school at Delia.

Funeral arrangements for the boy will not be made until today’s autopsy has been completed, Hiszczynskyj said.
